If you've played Tomb Raider: Legend, you'll already be familiar with the basic mechanics of the interactive cut scene, or "Quick Time Event". However, there are a few subtle differences between the Legend and Anniversary cut scenes.
As the action unfolds, you must press the keys that correspond to the icons that appear on screen. When you press the correct key, a chime sounds and Lara manages to evade the danger heading her way. If you press the wrong key, or press the correct one too soon or too late, Lara dies. Then the game reloads at the last checkpoint and you must try again.
Here is a recap of the first such cut scene in the game, along with instructions:
Lara sees the raptors approaching, followed by the T. rex. Lara runs from the dinosaurs but the T. rex catches up and lunges toward her. The action shifts into slow motion and you'll hear Lara's pounding heartbeat. Soon afterward, the Circle icon appears on screen (as shown above). You then have a few seconds to press the Circle button to make Lara evade the T. rex.
If you press the button before the icon appears, or too long after, you'll see the Circle icon with a slash through it, showing that you've failed. The T. rex catches Lara and you must start the sequence over.
After escaping from the T. rex, Lara spots a raptor heading straight for her. She lowers her guns and aims. The R1 icon appears on screen. When it does, press R1 to shoot the raptor. Again, if you're too quick or too slow, or press the wrong button, Lara dies. Otherwise you move on to the next part of the sequence.
The body of the fallen raptor slides toward Lara and the X icon appears on screen. When it does, press the X button to leap over the fallen enemy. If you succeed, the cut scene finishes and Lara faces the T. rex in actual gameplay. If you fail, Lara dies and the interactive sequence starts again.
TROUBLESHOOTING: If you're doing the right things but still not succeeding, consider the following:
- The slow-motion action and heartbeat sounds can start several seconds before the Circle icon appears. If you press any button during that period (even if it is the correct one), it'll constitute a failure and Lara will die.
- If you're seeing one of the icons with a slash through it (like the ring with a diagonal line in the universal "No Smoking" symbol), it means you're either pressing the wrong button or the right button too soon or too late.
- If you're not pressing anything but you're still seeing the Circle icon with the line through it, possibly the analog stick was not in its original position when you started the game. The game assumes you're pressing on the stick and interprets this as an incorrect button press. You fail and Lara dies. To fix the problem try restarting the PS2 with the stick in the neutral position. (I'm not sure if you also need to unplug the controller and plug it in again. Maybe a PS2 player could let me know about that.)
- If you've reconfigured the controls, be sure to press the button that corresponds with the action you need to perform. (Circle = crouch, R1 = fire weapon, X = jump). If you're not sure, try resetting the controls to the default for this sequence.
