Tomb Raider: Underworld and the two Xbox-exclusive expansion packs, Beneath the Ashes and Lara's Shadow, are now playable on Xbox One via backward compatibility. If you already own the game on disk, just follow the instructions below to install and play on Xbox One. If you don't yet have the game or DLC, you can purchase the digital version through the Xbox Store for $19.99 (£14.99 or €19,99). New and used Underworld CDs can also be found on eBay, Amazon, etc. (paid links) The story-based expansions still cost $9.99 (£6.75 or €9,49) each, though if you're patient there may be future sales. Various outfit packs are also available for free to a few dollars.
INSTALLING ON XBOX ONE WITH DISK
Turn on your console, sign in to your profile, and insert the Underworld disk.
Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install updates for Xbox One compatibility. This update is free, but you will need 7.2 GB free hard drive space to install it.
To check the progress of the download, press the Guide button ("X" logo in the upper middle of the controller), select Guide from the menu on the left side of the screen, then "Games & apps," then "Queue."
Once the update is complete, your console should restart automatically. You will then be able to launch the game from the Home screen or My games & apps.
BENEATH THE ASHES & LARA'S SHADOW DLC
The two expansion levels, Beneath the Ashes and Lara's Shadow, are also backward compatible, as are the various costume packs. (See the Outfits page for details. Some of these are available free.)
If you already own the DLC on Xbox 360, you should be able to install it again on Xbox One. Launch the game and go to the main menu. Select Downloadable Content (the icon at the 7:00 position that looks like an arrow pointing down) and press A. This will display new menu items at the top right. Choose "Download Content" (the icon at the 3:00 position) and press A again. (screenshot) That should bring you to the Xbox 360 store. From here you can either buy what you want using Xbox credit or see which DLC you have already purchased. These should have a check mark.
If you want to buy DLC now using a credit card or PayPal, you can do this through the Xbox store (rather than from within the game). The two bonus levels and the various costume packs are listed as add-ons for Underworld.
To download DLC you have purchased (either earlier on 360 or more recently on Xbox One), open "Games & apps," highlight Tomb Raider Underworld, and press the Menu button (the tiny button with three horizontal lines just above the right stick). Then choose "Manage game" from the pop-up menu. Select "Ready to install" and you should then see a list of the DLC you have purchased. Select individual items to install or just choose "Install all."
Once the DLC has been installed, you can access it from within the game. From the main menu, select Downloadable Content (the icon at the 7:00 position that looks like an arrow pointing down) and press A. This will display new menu items at the top right. Choose "Play Mission" (the icon at the 1:00 position with Lara holding her pistols) and press A again. (screenshot) On the next screen, choose either Beneath the Ashes or Lara's Shadow and enjoy!
If you're having trouble with any of this, check out the official Xbox One Backward Compatibility FAQ and this FAQ on Content License Transfers.
WALKTHROUGH
My walkthrough covers the Xbox 360 version in detail, including Beneath the Ashes and Lara's Shadow. As far as I know, the same general warnings regarding potential bugs apply to this version on the Xbox One as well.
REPLAYING LEVELS IN TREASURE HUNT MODE or STARTING A NEW GAME
When you complete the game, 'Treasure Hunt' appears in the center of the main menu where the 'Resume Game' option was. It enables you to go back and retrieve any treasures or relics you missed the first time through. If you want to start a brand new game, with all treasures and relics available to be found again, you'll need to delete your save files:
