NOTES ON THE REMASTER: At this point I can't guarantee 100% accuracy for this guide. Updates are in progress but will take time. Levels that have been worked on will say "Remastered," rather than "Classic," in the title. In the meantime, I have attempted to provide a running count of all kills and pickups, including totals for health packs, chocolates, sellable items, and cash, as well as notebook entries, which are needed for some achievements/trophies. If I've missed any, I do apologize. Please let me know if you discover anything not mentioned here. Also, in case it's not obvious, these guides are based on classic tank controls, and I have not yet included strats for all achievements/trophies.
LEVEL 20: THE MONSTRUM CRIME SCENE (Remaster)
Updated: 4/24/25(†)
LEVEL MAP by VGCartography (used with permission)*
Angel of Darkness Remastered Video Walkthrough by Eldincy
Items: 8, including 2 health items, Claw Hammer, Vasiley Full Fax, Obscura Engraving, Cellar Key, Strahov Low Security Pass, SCORPION X machine pistol
Kills: 4
Upgrades: Upper Body
Notebook Entries: 8
Cutscene: A brief aerial shot of the square where Mathias Vasiley's apartment is located. Lara arrives, gets out of the car, and comments on the weather.
SQUARE NEAR VASILEY'S APARTMENT: At the start of this level, your notebook is updated (39/62): "Check on Mathias Vasiley in Prague." You'll also notice that Lara has reclaimed the Vector (and dual Vectors) from The Cleaner, so they're back in your inventory. Approach the schlubby guy near the red car and talk to him. (screenshot)
IMPORTANT: For this conversation, your choices matter. So if you want to explore all the dialogue options, be sure to save first.
Dialogue - Luddick the journalist: Lara will get the same basic information regardless, but if you choose the polite options ("The one you're watching...", "I gather Vasiley was some kind of art dealer...", "You say he found something...", "Keep talking...", and "All of them?") and have at least 860 euros at the start of the level, you'll be able to buy a gun from Luddick later, enabling two achievements/trophies (below). Luddick will take 60 euros during the initial conversation. He'll tell Lara that the Mafia sent the Monstrum after Vasiley to prevent him from talking, and the evidence was tidied up and taken to the Strahov, the Mafia center of operations in Prague. He shares his notes on Eckhardt and the other major players (screenshot) and agrees to get Lara a security pass for the Strahov...for a price. Lara agrees and promises to meet him in a half hour.
NOTE: If you have enough cash, you have not choice but to pay what he asks. I have not yet tested what happens if Lara approaches Luddick with no money. Please let me know if you have.
Three more notebook entries (40-42/62) appear after speaking with the journalist: One says, "Look for 5th Obscura Engraving at Mathias Vasiley's premises." Two are notes based on Luddick's dossier on the Cabal members, Eckhardt, Karel, Muller, Boaz, and Gunderson. There are also a few earlier entries Von Croy made about the art dealer. (Again, this page on Von Croy's Notebook lists everything.)
Head into the alley near Luddick's car. There's a policeman (1) at the end. Kill him before he starts shooting at Lara, and pick up the CLAW HAMMER (1) he drops. (screenshots)
Cross the square toward Vasiley's building, the one cordoned off with yellow police tape. There's a trapdoor on the ground in front of the building to the right of Vasiley's. Use the hammer to break the lock. Then open the trapdoor and drop in. Climb down the ladder or safety drop into the tunnel and pick up a small medipack (2). Then climb back out through the trapdoor. (screenshots)
BACK ALLEYS: Now you're headed for a second trapdoor, in the alley behind and to the left of Vasiley's building. There are 2 policemen (2-3) and a police dog (4) on patrol here. If you like, you can just shoot all of them. But if you're going for the "Good Boys" achievement/trophy (avoid killing dogs or being bitten), here's a strategy that may help:
Approach the front left corner of Vasiley's building (when facing it). Look for one policeman in either of the two alleys at that corner. Run forward and shoot him, or use the stealth lean at the corner to snipe at him as he approaches. When he falls, run down the alley alongside Vasiley's building and look for the other policeman and the dog here. They'll probably be off to the left near the trapdoor. Wait until the dog notices you. Then run/sprint back the way you came. When you reach the square, turn into the alley on the right. Run/sprint forward to the next corner and turn right again. Run/sprint to the next corner and shoot the second policeman. (The dog should continue to pursue Lara.) When you've killed the cop, continue forward to the trapdoor. Use the claw hammer to open it and drop in. If you're fast, the dog will not have time to catch up. (screenshots)
NOTE: Depending on how long you take to get the hammer and open the first trapdoor, the 2 policemen and dog may be in slightly different positions than I describe. The same basic strategy should still work. Shoot the lone man, lure the dog away, and run/sprint around the building(s) until you can kill the other cop and open the trapdoor.
SEWER TUNNELS & VASILEY'S CELLAR: Follow the tunnel to a water-filled trench. Turn right, step over the pipe, and continue to a rubble-strewn hole in the wall. Go through into Vasiley's basement. (There are a few other side passages off the main sewer tunnel but they are dead ends.) Notice the arcane symbols painted on the wall and the red door on the right. It doesn't open yet. For now, continue up the short flight of steps, through the doorway on the left, and up the stairs into the apartment. (screenshots)
Cutscene: Lara catches Bouchard snooping around the apartment. She knocks him out and handcuffs him to a radiator.
Dialogue - Bouchard: You'll get the same basic information, with slight variations, regardless of which options you choose, but there are no "wrong" responses. Louis Bouchard apparently has no particular loyalty to Eckhardt or the Cabal. He gives Lara quite a bit of information on Eckhardt, who he believes to be the Monstrum, as well as the Cabal and the Obscura paintings and engravings. Apparently Eckhardt wants to revive the Cubiculum Nephili, also known as the "Sleeper," in order to bring the extinct Nephilim race back into existence. Bouchard tells Lara about the Vault of Trophies, one of the last Lux Veritatis strongholds, supposedly located somewhere beneath the Strahov. He believes she can find the fifth Obscura Painting there.
After this dialogue, your notebook is updated twice (43-44/62): "Locate the Vault of Trophies in the oldest part of the Strahov. Last Painting there." And, "Check the premises for a hidden area."
INSIDE VASILEY'S APARTMENT: Open the ornate door opposite Bouchard and enter the main room of the apartment. Climb the spiral staircase to the upper level. Run around to the other side of the walkway and push/pull the small chest of drawers to get an upper-body strength upgrade. Pull up onto scaffolding, then climb to the highest level. Turn left and take a running jump over to the scaffolding to the left of the huge stained-glass window. Pull the chain twice to tilt the window outward and move a cabinet downstairs, revealing a small medipack. (Lara will not be strong enough to pull the chain before getting the upgrade.) (screenshots)
Take a running jump to the scaffolding on the right side of the window and pull the second chain four times. The first two pulls close the window. Pulling a third and fourth time tilts the window inward and also opens the face on the grandfather clock downstairs. A brief cutscene shows the design inlaid on the parquet floor. Three o'clock is prominent. (screenshots)
NOTE: If you pull the chains in the reverse order, right then left, you'll need to pull the right chain twice then the left chain four times.
Drop down from the scaffolding onto the walkway below. Then return downstairs. Take the small medipack (3) from the secret compartment you just opened. Then approach clock. Press Action to interact with the clock face. Press Right/Left to move the hands to 3 o'clock. This opens a hidden staircase in the middle of the floor. (screenshots)
Descend these stairs to a SECRET ROOM IN THE BASEMENT. Examine the display cases. Three of them yield more information about the Periapt Shards and the Cubiculum Nephili. (Your notebook is updated (45/62) with the Latin inscription, "TRES PERIAPTI CONIUNCTI CUM IUSTITIAE IGNE MALA CINGUNT," and its English translation, "The three Periapts joined together burn with righteous light to confine evil.") The fourth case has what looks like a Star Wars Battle Droid head but no useful info. (screenshots)
Pick up the Vasiley Full Fax (4) from the floor near the desk. Examine it in your inventory to find a secret code: 31597. Use this code at the keypad behind the desk to open the secret compartment behind the painting. Take the LAST OBSCURA ENGRAVING (5). (screenshots)
NOTE: As far as I know, the website mentioned in the fax, shadowwhistories.pr, does not exist and didn't at the time the game was released. Angel of Darkness writer Murti Schofield's website does include a section on his series of novels, The Shadow Histories.
LEAVING THE APARTMENT: Return upstairs and exit through the door to the right of the grandfather clock. In a brief cutscene, Lara discovers Bouchard has vanished. Go into the hall and turn left. Open the closet door ahead on the left. In another short cutscene, Bouchard's body tumbles out. Search near his body for the CELLAR KEY (6). Continue to the end of the hall and down the stairs to the the CELLAR. Cross the room and go through the red door, which opens now that you have the key. (screenshots)
NOTE: If you left the dog alive earlier for the "Good Boys" achievement/trophy, he may be lurking outside now. So I'd recommend saving before exiting the building. If you don't see the dog, just run to the journalist and initiate dialogue before the dog notices Lara. If the dog is in your way, try luring it down the cellar steps. Then quickly climb up out of its way. Once the dog comes down the stairs, it should be stuck there. Or, if all else fails, you can lead the dog around the block and sprint back to Luddick. (screenshots)
Another notebook entry (46/62) unlocks as you emerge from the CELLAR: "Get Strahov entry code from Luddick." Make sure to read it for the "Memento Mori" achievement/trophy. Conveniently, Luddick is waiting for you here behind Vasiley's building.
Dialogue - Luddick: The journalist tells Lara he was able to get her a STRAHOV LOW SECURITY PASS (7). He warns her of the dangers inside even as he seals the deal on an exclusive interview should she happen to find anything. He also sells her a SCORPION X MACHINE PISTOL (8) and gives her a ride to the Strahov.
NOTE: Luddick provides the security pass whether or not Lara antagonized him earlier, but he'll only offer the gun if Lara was polite during their first encounter and you still have 800 euros in your inventory. In that case, as far as I can tell, you have no choice about whether to buy the gun. If Lara has enough money, this will happen automatically, and the "Automatic from Luddick" achievement/trophy will unlock at the beginning of the STRAHOV FORTRESS. (screenshot) At the end of that level, you'll have the opportunity to unlock "Two of Every Kind" when you find a second Scorpion X.

*NOTE ON LEVEL MAPS: VGCartography's Angel of Darkness maps follow a slightly different level-naming convention than I do. You'll notice most of the Parisian Ghetto-adjacent areas on the same large map. Later, the elemental levels off the Hall of Seasons are included on the same map as the hub level. Visit VGCartography on DeviantArt and follow on Twitter/X and YouTube for more fantastic game maps.
