TOMB RAIDER 3: TRAINING LEVEL
Getting the Quad Bike Out of the Racetrack

DRIVING METHOD:

As far as I know, this can only be done on the PlayStation, since the quad bike doesn't go fast enough to make the jump on the PC or Mac. Consequently, I have no screenshots.

If anyone has done this and would like to share screens, videos or other info with the group, please let me know. According to Mystery Man, the first person to pull off this stunt and write about it, here's how he did it (quoted from tombraiders.com):

 (1)

The idea is get Quad bike on the short green hedge where very last two jumps are.

 (2)

Once on hedge, back up all way to end of hedge and hold handbrake.

 (3)

When the engine of quad is revved up then let the handbrake go.

 (4)

Now, next part is very tricky and its *timing* is very important. So keep going until you reach halfway on sloped hedge.

 (5)

Then, hit right very sharply so you should turn right in mid air.

 (6)

Hopefully, you will land on the top left corner of the concrete block near the entrance... [Accelerate to get the bike up onto the block.] ...enjoy ride around Mansion!

I only managed three times so far and that must be one of hardest task I ever done in all three tomb raider games!

Brown Slope Variation: Here's a slight variation on Mystery Man's version, which involves racing up the brown slope and cutting across the end of the green hedge to land on the raised block near the gate: stereopathic's version and Jaketherake101's version. Thanks, guys!

PC HACK METHOD:

The only way I know of to get the quad bike out of the track on the PC is to use the following downloads and instructions. You'll also need the PC CD for Tomb Raider 3. Special thanks to Bart Ramekers (and to Theresa from tombraiders.com who originally posted these files).

IMPORTANT WARNING: Stella and tombraiders.net are not responsible for anything that may go wrong with your game or your system as a result of using these files. I have done this myself without causing any problems, but please understand that you use the files at your own risk. I recommend backing up your original files (at least your game saves) in case something goes wrong and you need to reinstall the game.

 (1)

Download Bart's file (quadbike.zip 4 KB), which contains several savegame files and a text file with very good instructions.

 (2)

Download the Tomb Raider 3 South Pacific demo.

 (3)

Install the demo (i.e., run the file you downloaded, tr3_pc_demo2.exe).

 (4)

Once the demo is installed, go into the demo directory on your hard drive (which should be C:\Program Files\Core Design\Tomb Raider III (Demo) or something similar) and open the 'Data' folder. Find the file 'Shore.tr2' and rename it 'Shore2.tr2'.

 (5)

Copy the file 'House.tr2' from the Data folder on your Tomb Raider 3 game CD into the Data folder in the demo directory.

 (6)

Rename 'House.tr2' to 'Shore.tr2'.

 (7)

Unzip the three savegame files from the quadbike.zip file into the demo folder. (Place the savegame files in the directory where the Tomb3.exe file is, not in the Data folder.)

 (8)

Run the demo (by double-clicking the tomb3.exe icon or from the Windows Start Menu). Go to the passport and load any of the three saved games, which are labeled to tell what they are. Now drive around the house and grounds to your heart's content. Note that unlike in the regular TR3 training level, you can save your game.

More Savegames - Here are some additional savegames for the Lara's Mansion/Pacific Demo (above). Many of these have been patched to include weapons besides the pistols and to place Lara in unusual spots. The accompanying text files tell all. Again, extract the saves to the Tomb Raider III (Demo) folder and run the demo to load them.

PLAYSTATION + GAMESHARK METHOD:

These codes were discovered by Womb-Raider (and originally posted on tombraiders.com).

IMPORTANT WARNING: Womb-Raider, Stella and tombraiders.net are not responsible for anything that may go wrong with your GameShark or PlaySation as a result of trying these codes. Use them at your own risk.

According to Womb-Raider, "These codes work on GameShark Pro v3.0 and GameShark v2.4 but may cause lock-ups on other versions. If your GameShark does lock up, check out their web site (gameshark.com) on how to send it in for "unlocking". This code hasn't been tested in conjunction with any other codes, so again, you've been warned."

 (1)

Create a new code on your GameShark (only tested on a GameShark Pro v3.0 and GameShark 2.4 so far) and name it something like "TR3 Quad out of track" or just add it to your existing TR3 codes.

 (2)

Enter in ALL the codes in ONE code, there are eleven codes you'll need to enter. Here are the codes. (They are spaced out for ease of reading, do NOT enter them with the spaces.) If you feel like fooling with these codes only change the labeled ones and only change the LAST FOUR characters. It's in Hex so convert it to decimal or something first for fine tuning.

       801 B7B 04 0000
       801 B7B 06 0001
       801 B7B 24 C53B (This is the Quad's forward and reverse position)
       801 B7B 2C B9D4 (This is the Quad's side to side position)
       801 B7B 32 802D (This is the angle of the Quad's rotation)
       801 B7B 44 0A1C
       801 B7B 48 F4EA
       801 B7B 4C FA73
       801 B7B 60 1F1F
       801 B7B 62 371F
       801 B7B 82 0022

NOTES: The unlabeled codes above have to do with how the Quad is drawn and whaNot. There may be an easier way to do this with a GameShark but this works for me. I also found some variables that really do some weird stuff like make the Quad invisible, Produce a Twin Lara as she rides around, and REALLY glitch up the Quad's graphics as it putts around, but they don't help it get out of the track :)

 (3)

Save it and then go to your GameShark Pro's options menu.

 (4)

In the GameShark Pro's option menu there's an option for code toggle which allows you to turn off any enabled codes by hitting SELECT + L2 + R2 and conversely, turn on the codes again by hitting SELECT + L1 + R1. Make SURE this option is ON or the code won't work!

ADDITION: Using the switch on the side of the GameShark 2.4 is the same as turning the codes on and off like with a GameShark Pro 3.0. So this text is a tad out of date since this code DOES work on a GameShark 2.4 AND a GameShark Pro 3.0. Check the alt.games.tombraider newsgroup for the original post and other things about this.

 (5)

Boot up Tomb Raider 3 with code toggle ON and the Quad out of track code ON.

 (6)

Wait and get really excited.

 (7)

OK, now go to Lara's House and everything will seem normal. Run down to the Quad track and enter in the code to get the Racetrack Key. (See walkthrough and More GameShark Codes below.) Open the Quad track gate and you will sorta see the Quad sitting on the other side of the cement block. Lara will bump into it like normal. The view of the Quad is a tad glitchy until you get on it. This is normal.

 (8)

Climb on board and find that you can't drive anywhere. This is because the code is still ON and holding the Quad in place. (Technically, the GameShark has frozen the Quad's position in RAM so you can't drive anywhere as the game engine can't update that RAM partition.) So, if you have a GameShark Pro hit SELECT + L2 + R2 and you'll go into the TR3 options screen (a by-product) as well as "unfreeze" the quad's position in RAM. (If you have a regular GameShark try turning off the switch on its side.)

 (9)

Get out of TR3's option screen and you'll be able to drive the quad around Lara's house. If you get into a jam with the Quad (i.e. stuck), turn the code back on with SELECT + L1 + R1 and you'll pop right back to where you started. (This forces the codes back on and jams predetermined values into TR3's Quad Bike Position in RAM. And you thought the corner bug was startling the first time you saw it. :) Turn off the codes to drive again.

Some tips:
     • Stay out of the water unless you feel like losing the quad and killing Lara.
     • Don't drive into the middle of her bed and get out unless you feel like doing this over again or know which variable in RAM to change to get the quad out.
     • Drive around and notice how many things the quad can drive through. (Try locking you and Jeeves in the freezer.)
     • Drive over Jeeves in his Tux and his WW1 outfit. Note the differences.
