NOTE: In the walkthrough for the first level I attempted to note the location of every gem, breakable urn, etc. In later levels, I don't mention them all. So unless you're attempting a time challenge, stay alert. Try to kill every enemy, light every brazier, and break or blow up every destructible object, including vases, cracked floor tiles, sarcophagi, etc., for maximum score.
TOMB ENTRANCE: The entrance to this tomb is located behind the waterfall in the Waterfall of Sobek area of the Overworld. Once you have completed the Tomb of the Ferryman, the waterfall will part revealing the tomb entrance. (screenshot) It will also be marked on the in-game map. (screenshot)
STARTING AREA: Smash the vases and light the braziers on the way downstairs. Stepping on the pressure pad at the bottom triggers a brief cutscene in which the a gas vent ignites, boiling the water in the nearby pool and killing an unsuspecting crocodile. Smash the remaining vases and light the braziers for gems. Shoot the crocodiles in the pool on the right. (You won't receive points for the kills if you boil them.)
Then use your torch to light the gas vent in the upper corner to heat the water in the pool, raising a pillar so you can climb onto the next ledge. (screenshot)
NOTE: If you're attempting the 10-minute time challenge, you can save a few seconds here and there by using incendiary weapons (or a relic that confers fire projectiles) instead of the torch to light the vents. (screenshot)
Shoot a couple more crocs in the pool ahead. Then use the grapple ring to climb onto the ledge on the left. (screenshot) In the co-op game there is no ring, so you'll need to use the shield and grapple to get everyone onto the ledge. (screenshot)
Here and throughout this level, you should avoid falling into the boiling water if you want to beat the Challenge: Complete Tomb without Being Damaged by Hot Water. It's perfectly fine to take a dip before heating up the various pools. If you fall into hot water, either reload the last checkpoint, losing points in the process, or keep going and plan to replay later. If you have a close call and aren't sure whether you touched the water or not, check the Challenges screen. As long as there's no red 'X' for that challenge, you're doing fine. (screenshot)
LEDGES AND SPIKED WALL: Light another gas vent here to boil the water below, raising a pillar out of the pool, and opening the gates above the pillar. A crocodile warrior appears on the ledge ahead. If you're quick, you can complete a Challenge: Use a Spike Wall to Kill a Sobek Warrior. Jump onto the pillar in the boiling pool and from there to the ledge. Move around to the right, so the enemy is between you and the spiked wall. Shoot him until he falls down. Before he can get up, plant a remote bomb below and to the right of him, so the edge of the blast radius overlaps his body. Then detonate the bomb to blast him into the spikes. You should then beat the challenge, unlocking the SUMMER COPPER RING OF PROTECTION (Defense+, Speed+, Daytime or Rainy Only). Don't worry if you don't get it the first time. You'll have two more chances momentarily. (screenshots)
The process for the spike wall challenge is the same in the co-op game.
Kill the crocodiles in the next pool and Shoot the Eye of Horus switch in the far right corner to open an alcove with a weapon pickup, which we'll get to in a moment. (screenshot)
In the single-player game, use the grapple ring off to the left to get up onto the ledge above the spiked wall. There's another grapple ring above that will enable you to reach the alcove with the red skull (1/5). Light the gas vent in the corner to the right. This heats the pool below, raising another pillar and opening another gate. As the next 2 enemies approach, you can wait for them to come to you, or if you haven't beaten the spike wall challenge, quickly jump down onto the ledge near the spikes and run behind the column on the right. The warriors' bombs can't hit you here, and you'll be in a good spot to fight them for the challenge. Shoot the first warrior until he falls down. Then try and blast his body into the spikes with a remote bomb. If it doesn't work, try the same thing with the next enemy. (screenshots)
In 2-player co-op, the golden ring is directly above the spiked wall, so Lara will need to grapple it so Isis or Horus can tightrope walk up to the ledge, move over to the left, and then let Lara grapple him or her so she can climb up without getting skewered. Then the Egyptian can extend his or her shield so Lara can reach the red skull (1/5). Lara should then light the gas vent on the right to heat the pool below, raising another pillar and letting in the next 2 enemies. If you're still working on the spike wall challenge, refer to the tips in the single-player version, above. (screenshots)
In 3- or 4-player co-op, the sequence is essentially the same as for 2 players, except that 2 characters, including one archaeologist and one Egyptian, need to tightrope walk up to get the red skull and light the gas vent. The other(s) can wait below.
When the fighting is over, use the pillar in the boiling pool to reach the GRENADE LAUNCHER in the alcove. (If the alcove is still closed, hop down to the lower ledge and shoot the Eye of Horus switch in the far right corner to open it.) Then jump over to the next ledge. (screenshot)
GOLDEN HANDLE AND COLLAPSING LEDGES: Continue up the stairs, turn left, and jump across the gap in the walkway. Pull the golden handle as far as it will go. Then quickly jump across the wooden ledges before they collapse. (screenshot) On the other side, grapple the golden ring and rappel down the wall to get the red skull (2/5). Then climb back up. (screenshot)
In 2-player co-op, either player can pull the handle so both can then jump across the wooden ledges. On the other side, Lara can use the Egyptian character's shield to reach the ledge above. Then she can grapple Isis/Horus and lower her/him down to the red skull. (screenshot)
In 3- or 4-player co-op, the red skull is in an alcove above the second wooden ledge. Have one player pull the handle and hold it so the others can jump across, then use the bubble shield to reach the skull, then continue to the other side. The character holding the handle can the release it and quickly jump across to rejoin the others. (screenshot)
Shoot the Eye of Horus switch to open the first gate on the ledge above. Then drop a remote bomb near the switch, climb up onto the ledge, move between the gates, and then detonate the bomb to flip the switch, closing the gate behind and opening the one ahead. (screenshot) light the gas vent to re-open both gates and raise a wooden ledge below. This ledge does not collapse, so you can take your time dropping down and jumping across the gap. (screenshot)
Three minions of Sobek are standing on the columns alongside the next staircase. If you face them squarely you can you knock them off their perches with well-aimed grenades (screenshot), but doing so will not increase your score. If you want the points, you'll need to shoot each enemy until he falls down. Then jump over to his pedestal and bomb the body. (screenshot) When you've killed all of them, continue to the top of the stairs, jumping across a wide gap along the way.
FIRST ROTATING GEAR PUZZLE: Kill the crocodiles in the pool. Then shoot the switch so the green side faces you and the huge gear on the left is turning clockwise. Jump onto the block in the pool and use your torch to light one of the gas vents on the gear. Wait for the gear to turn, lighting the gas vent in the corner between the two gears. Then shoot the switch again to change the direction of both gears. Now the gear on the right moves clockwise, carrying the fire from the vent in the corner to the gas vent on the right. Mission accomplished! The water in the pool begins to boil, raising a pillar so you can climb (carefully) onto the ledge above. (screenshots)
NOTE: If you're attempting the 10-minute time challenge, you can save a little time here by using incendiary weapons (or a relic that confers fire projectiles) to light the vent on the right instead of solving the entire puzzle. (screenshot)
Go around to the left and climb onto the ledge above the gears to find a MAX HEALTH UPGRADE and some gems sitting near a large sarcophagus. (screenshot)
LARGE ROOM WITH SHALLOW POOLS: Continue to the next room, smashing urns, lighting braziers, blowing up cracked floor tiles, and picking up health and ammo along the way if you need it. The gate closes behind you, but as long as you don't light the gas vent at the far end of the room, nothing dangerous happens, and you can explore the walkways and wade around in the pools, breaking vases, blowing up cracked floor tiles, and picking up gems and other supplies. Later, when you've heated the water, you won't be able to do this.
The next red skull (3/5) is sitting in an alcove high on the left. (screenshot) In the single-player game, you'll need to wait to get it. In co-op mode use the Staff of Osiris to raise a pillar in the pool. Then grapple the golden ring in the alcove so another character can tightrope walk across to the skull. (screenshot)
When you're ready for action, wade into the pool at the far end of the room from the entrance and use your torch to light the gas vent. As Lara explains, the gas is then directed to the second vent, on the left side of the room. The gate in front of that vent opens, and several enemies emerge. (screenshots)
Quickly climb out of the pool before the water starts to boil. Remember, you don't want to take damage if you're going for the hot water challenge. The other pools are safe for now, but you'll probably want to stay on the walkway as you fight various skeletons, scarabs, and Sobek warriors, including flaming and poisonous varieties.
When you've taken care of them, wade through the pool on the left and light the second vent. This shunts the gas to the third vent in the middle pool. Quickly get to shore before the water in the pool on the left heats up. More enemies appear, mostly skeletons and a few minions of Sobek. Some will drop health packs or ammo when you destroy them. (screenshots)
After the fighting, wade into the middle pool and light the third vent. When you do, a cutscene introduces a new type of enemy: priests of Sobek. These guys can summon lightning, even indoors. You'll see a white circle on the floor shortly before each lightning strike, so you can move out of the way. Igniting the last vent also raises a walkway in the middle pool and heats the water there, so climb out a.s.a.p. Along with the priests, you'll need to fight more skeletons and scarabs. Deal with them first while avoiding the lightning strikes. Then take on the priests. Shoot them until they fall down and then destroy their bodies with remote bombs or grenades. (screenshots)
When you kill the last enemy, the exit opens. Pick up all the health packs and ammo you can carry. If you're playing the single-player game and haven't gotten the red skull (3/5) yet, move to the lower left corner and use the Staff of Osiris to raise a column in the boiling pool. Jump onto it and from there to the tall column ahead, which rose up when you defeated the last group of enemies. From there you can reach the ledge with the skull. (screenshot) Take it, raise the staff, and carefully jump back over to the walkway.
Now head for the exit at the far end of the room and continue upstairs to the next area.
PLATFORMS WITH GAS VENT AND PRESSURE PAD: The pressure pad on the platform near the entrance turns on a gas vent on the next platform to the left, but the pad must be pressed continually to keep the gas flowing. In the single-player game, hop across the gap and place a remote bomb behind the large metal ball. Jump back over to the right and detonate the bomb to fling the ball across the gap. Grab it and roll it beneath the ledge on the right so you can climb up to get the red skull (4/5). Then roll the ball onto the pressure pad. Jump back across the gap and use your torch to light the gas vent. Doing so reveals a grapple ring on the higher ledge in the upper corner. Grapple the ring, leap out into the gap, and climb up. (screenshots)
In the 2-player game, there is no metal ball. So begin by having Lara jump on Isis's or Horus's shield to reach the red skull (4/5). Then the Egyptian can stand on the pressure pad to activate the gas vent while Lara jumps over and lights it, revealing the grapple ring ahead. The cover on the ring only stays open if the gas remains lit. So Lara should then jump back to the right, take Isis's or Horus's place on the pressure pad, and grapple the ring so the other character can tightrope walk up the cable. Once the Egyptian reaches the higher ledge. Lara should release the ring, grapple the other character instead, and then leap out into the gap, and climb up. (screenshots)
The puzzle is the same in 4-player co-op as it is for 2-player, and I assume the 3-player version is similar. Just get everyone across via tightrope except for Lara or Carter, who should stand on the pressure pad and extend the grapple. Then he or she can step off the pad, grapple one of the other characters, and climb up.
Smash some vases and grab a few gems. Then jump across the wide gap in the walkway and head downstairs.
ROOM WITH SPIKES AND GLOWING SPHERE: You can't use the glowing sphere yet, so leave it for now. Grapple the golden ring ahead on the right and climb onto the ledge above. Move around to the left and stand on the pressure pad to temporarily retract the spears sticking out of the wall above the spike pit. Quickly jump across the gap before the spears pop out again. (Standing on the second pad retracts the spears again but they only stay retracted as long as there is weight on one of the pads.) Use the Staff of Osiris to destroy the Mark of Set in the alcove. Doing so opens the gate below. (screenshots)
Climb down on the left, get the illuminated sphere, and roll it up the stairs onto the tile with Osiris's glyphs. Raise the staff to extend a column, lifting Lara and the sphere to ledge above, so you can then roll the sphere onto the pressure pad. Plant a remote bomb behind the sphere. Jump across the spikes and stand on the other pressure pad. This will keep the wall of spears retracted as you detonate the bomb to launch the sphere across the gap. (screenshots)
Catch the ball and roll it away from the edge but don't put it in the cage yet. First place another remote bomb below and to the right of the round pedestal near the raised gas vent. (There's a scorch mark on the floor indicating where to place the bomb.) Then roll the ball onto the pedestal. Detonate the bomb to launch the ball upward. The fire inside the ball should then light the gas, opening the gate on the left so you can get the MAX AMMO UPGRADE. Finally, roll the sphere into the cage to open the exit. (screenshots)
In the co-op game, this room is basically the same except there is a second column with Osiris's glyphs and 2 gas vents on the lower level. Start by using the staff to raise the column on the right. Then use the shield and grapple to get both characters onto the ledge above. Have Isis/Horus go around to the left and stand on the pressure pad to activate the gas vent below. Then Lara can drop down and light it with her torch. This retracts the wall of spears above the spikes. Isis/Horus can then jump across and destroy the Mark of Set in the alcove to open the gate below. (screenshots)
Now Lara can roll the glowing sphere up the stairs and onto the tile with Osiris's glyphs. Isis/Horus should the raise the staff to extend a column, lifting Lara and the sphere to ledge above, so she can then roll the sphere onto the pressure pad. Either character can then plant a remote bomb behind the sphere jump across the spikes, and stand on the other pressure pad. If the gas vent on the left has not remained lit, Lara can then climb down and light either of the vents to retract the spears. Then detonate the bomb to launch the sphere across the gap. (screenshots)
Catch the ball and roll it away from the edge but don't put it in the cage yet. Retrieve the MAX AMMO UPGRADE as in the single-player game. Or, use a combination of the ball and one character's shield, or two characters standing one on top of the other with shields extended, so another character can light the raised gas vent in the corner. Doing so opens the gate so you can reach the upgrade. (screenshots)
SECOND ROTATING GEAR PUZZLE: Kill the crocodiles in the pool on either side of the platform. Then move toward the end to trigger a few more enemies: A Sobek warrior (or two in co-op) from the water near the huge gears (screenshot), plus a few scarabs and skeletons from ahead and behind. If necessary, you can roll past them and up the stairs at the entrance. Then deal with the enemies as they approach. (screenshot) Afterward, bomb the cracked floor, smash the vases, and pick up more gems before tackling the puzzle.
NOTE: If you're attempting the 10-minute time challenge, you can save quite a bit of time here by using incendiary weapons (or a relic that confers fire projectiles) to light the vent on the left instead of solving the entire puzzle. (screenshot)
To solve the puzzle in the usual way, start by shooting the switch so the green side faces out, causing the huge gear on the right to rotate clockwise. Jump onto the block in the pool and use your torch to light one of the gas vents on the gear. The gear will then turn, carrying the fire to the gas vent in the right corner. When it ignites, a golden ring is revealed above. Grapple the ring and climb onto the ledge above the gears. Raise the Staff of Osiris as you push the time bomb into the gap on the left side of the grapple ring. Set a remote bomb behind the time bomb and detonate it to fling the bomb down onto the ledge with the switch. Then jump down after it. Roll the bomb to the left side of the platform, opposite the ledge across the water. Then use another remote bomb to hurl the time bomb over to that ledge. Jump over there or wade through the water and climb out on the left side of the ledge. (The right side is a little glitchy and sometimes won't let you climb out). Then jump on top of the bomb to reach the final red skull. (5/5) (screenshots)
In co-op mode you should still light the first gas vent as described above, but there is no time bomb. Instead one character can jump on another's shield to reach the red skull. (screenshot)
If you have found all five skulls, you'll receive the WEAKENED COPPER RING OF REACH (Bomb Radius+, Speed+, Weapon Damage-).
Now shoot the switch again so the red side faces out, causing the gear on the right to rotate counterclockwise. Then place a remote bomb near the switch, but don't detonate it yet. Use the grapple ring to climb onto the ledge above the gears once more. Raise the staff to prevent the time bomb from exploding and push it onto the pressure pad on the left. This activates the gas vent between the left and middle gears. (The one on the far left already has gas flowing out of it.) (screenshots)
Continue to hold the staff up as you move onto the pressure pad on the right. This activates the gas vent between the right and middle gears. The gear on the right then rotates, carrying the fire from the lit vent on the left to the vent you just activated. Remain on the pad as you detonate the remote bomb to flip the switch, this time from red back to green, reversing the direction of the gears once more. Doing so causes the middle gear to turn counterclockwise, carrying the fire from the gas vent you just lit to the next vent on the left, which is being held on by the time bomb. (screenshots)
As soon as the vent to the left of the middle gear lights, jump down onto the platform and quickly shoot the switch one last time. This flips the switch from green to red and reverses the rotation of the gears. Now the gear on the left turns counterclockwise, carrying the fire from the gas vent you just lit to the vent the left corner. (screenshots)
In the co-op game the puzzle is the same, but there is no remote bomb. So you'll need to light the vent in the right corner, just as in the single-player version. Then shoot the switch so the right gear is rotating counterclockwise. Have two players plant remote bombs near the switch and then climb onto the ledge above the gears in order to stand on the 2 pressure pads. Now all of the gas vents should be on. Wait for the wheel on the right to carry the fire to the vent between the right and middle gears. Then detonate one of the remote bombs to flip the switch (or shoot the switch without moving off the pressure pad) to make the middle gear turn counterclockwise, carrying the fire to the next vent. When it is lit, detonate the second remote bomb (or shoot the switch again) to make the left gear rotate counterclockwise, carrying the fire to the vent in the left corner. (screenshots)
In all versions, once the gas vent in the left corner is lit, the puzzle is solved and the water in both pools begins to boil, causing a set of columns to rise in the pool above. If any of your characters are still on the lower level, wait for the flames on the middle gear to go out and then carefully grapple up onto the ledge, making sure not to touch the boiling water for the hot water challenge. Then use the columns to reach the wide corridor above. (screenshots)
COLLAPSING FLOOR TILES AND RUN TO THE EXIT: As you move forward, the gate closes behind you and 6 gas vents come on. The next area is visible through the gate ahead. If you played Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, you'll recognize the collapsing floor. These hazardous tiles crumble away beneath you as you move over them, so you'll need to go quickly. If you're playing the co-op game, you may want to assign each player to the left or right side of the course to avoid falling into the gaps the other(s) leave behind.
Before starting, I recommend taking a moment to equip items that increase speed. In addition to simply getting through the tricky run without dying repeatedly, there's a Challenge: Step on All Ammit Crumbling Floor Tiles in Exit. There are 8 tiles with Ammit's image in all. They are described below and shown in the screenshots.
Begin by lighting any of the gas vents with your torch. This sets off a chain reaction that opens the gate ahead and triggers a series of floor spikes. The white circles indicate where the spikes will pop up, so get going. Run forward across the collapsing tiles, jumping over the gaps where there are missing tiles. Stay to the right at first, since the first Ammit tile is just ahead on the right. The second Ammit tile is a bit farther along on the left, and the third tile is in the middle. (screenshots)
After the first section of collapsing tiles there's a solid ledge with a couple of Sobek's minions standing on it. This also serves as a checkpoint. So if you're going after the Ammit tile challenge and miss one, you can reload before you reach this checkpoint and try again. Don't linger on the ledge with the enemies, since spikes pop out of the floor after a few seconds. Jump onto the next set of break-away tiles then continue forward and left to reach the fourth Ammit tile. (screenshots)
Now the entire walkway takes a turn to the left. Keep going straight ahead as you aim for the right side of the walkway beyond the corner. Here you'll find a pillar with a nice cache of gems on it. Grab them if you can. If not, don't worry; just try to stay along the right side as you round the corner since the fifth Ammit tile lies along the right edge. (screenshots)
After crossing the fifth tile, veer to the left and jump onto another wide ledge, where there is another checkpoint and several priests of Sobek waiting to smite you with lightning bolts. Ignore them and continue forward onto the next set of crumbling tiles flanked by arrow traps. Stay to the left throughout this next section, since all of the remaining Ammit tiles are on the left. The sixth Ammit tile is next to the fourth arrow trap. (screenshots)
Keep going forward along the left side of the tiles. When you come to two extra-large tiles, veer to the left side of the large tile on the left and jump from its corner onto the sixth Ammit tile. Then jump back to the right so you don't fall into the chasm. Continue along the middle/left until you come to the eighth and final Ammit tile near the end of the run on the left. If you have managed to step on them all, you'll receive your reward, a MAX AMMO UPGRADE, immediately. (screenshots)
Just ahead is the level exit, but it is closed. Run forward and grab the bag of gems from the low pedestal to open the exit and add a few extra points to your total. If you beat the Challenge: Complete Tomb without Being Damaged by Hot Water, you will also get a MAX HEALTH UPGRADE when you pick up the gems. (screenshot) There are also a few braziers you can light and urns you can smash if you're a few gems short of the 85,000-point gold challenge. If you beat it, you'll unlock the FAST ACTION RIFLE. (screenshot)
If you're going for the time challenge, don't bother gathering the gems, just run up to the gem bag to make the door open and then run through the exit. If you manage to complete the level in less than 10 minutes, you'll receive an amulet: the BRONZE OSIRIS'S POISON FLAIL (Scatter Shot, Poisonous Projectiles, Poison Bomb).
TREASURE ROOM: As you enter the area at the end of the level, you receive the MAJESTIC RIGHT FOOT OF OSIRIS. Pick up gems, health, and ammo, and raid the treasure chests if you like. Then stand on the circle with the golden glyph and press the button indicated to exit this cave and return to the Overworld.
NOTE: Once you've completed this level you can replay it at any time by re-entering it from the Overworld. You'll probably need at least two passes to complete the challenges, since it's difficult to achieve both the point challenge and time challenge in the same playthrough.
†UPDATE HISTORY: 1/7/15 - First draft of walkthrough posted.
