LEVEL 5: KAZAKHSTAN

In a cut scene, Lara sees Rutland's men attacking the Kazakh soldiers in the compound below.

DROPPING INTO THE COMPOUND: Take a running jump off the cliff and press A to deploy Lara's parachute. When she lands on the roof below, drop down and head to the right. Kill 3 mercenaries and pick up whatever goodies they drop. Stand in front of the door of the building to the right of the red barrels and press Up to enter.

Once inside the building, go to the right, shoot 2 more soldiers, pick up their items and climb the ladder.

(NOTE: You can also go back outside through the door on the left. The 3 mercenaries reappear and you can kill them again and get more items. Then, when you go back into the building, the 2 soldiers also reappear. You can repeat this until you have all the items you want.)

On the roof, holster your weapon and take a running jump across the gap between buildings to the structure on the right. Climb up and kill another soldier and then slide down the ramp to the right.

Climb down the ladder to the ground and confront 2 mercenaries to the right. Continue to the right to the next building. Stand near the door and press Up to enter. Inside, go to the right to the blinking screen and press Up to use the computer. It then stops blinking. Return to the door to the left and go back outside.

Now the gate to the right is open. Go through, kill the 3 mercenaries blocking the path, grab their items and head up the hill. You can't enter the building, so instead climb the ladder. Climb the stacked crates then face left and jump up to grab the angled cable. Slide down a long way to the roof of a building to the left of where you landed after the parachute jump. Drop down to the ground, kill 2 more soldiers and approach the motorcycle to the left. A CHECKPOINT is triggered when you finish this area.

MOTORCYCLE CHASE: The controls are the same as in Peru: Press R to accelerate, B to brake or reverse, A to shoot and control pad direction buttons to steer. As in the previous bike sequence, you need to avoid obstacles and shoot enemies—this time in Jeeps as well as on bikes—and pick up health packs when you can by driving over them. Here you're chasing a train, so there's a bit of a time limit. You need not race frantically, but you will see messages on the screen if you're going too slowly. Then you should speed up a bit or the level will end prematurely and you'll have to restart from the beginning of the bike sequence.

There's no correct path. Just keep moving forward, more or less keeping pace with the train. At the end of the sequence, there's a brown wooden ramp angled to the left toward the train. Drive up this ramp as if to jump the motorcycle onto the train. A CHECKPOINT follows the cut scene.

The GBA game's one-panel cut scene is actually quite action packed in the "big" version of Legend. Lara jumps her bike onto the train then, as it crashes, does some daring acrobatics to escape without a scratch.

INSIDE THE SECRET LAB COMPLEX: You begin on an elevated platform. Jump to grab the brown metal structure on the wall to the right. Climb along it and jump to grab the platform near the ladder. Pull up, cross to the right and grab the sign with the red star. (If you walk to the right, Lara does this automatically. No need to jump.)

Climb to the right but not all the way to the end. Jump to grab the horizontal bar. Swing, jump and grab the ledge on the right. Now you're working your way across above the burning train wreck. From the ledge, jump to grab the top of the next sign, then the brown metal structure beyond. Climb to the right and then jump to another elevated walkway.

Go to the right end of the walkway and drop down to the floor. On the left you'll find a silver reward. Get it and return to the right to the sign with the star. Jump up and grab onto it and from there climb back up onto the walkway. Jump to grab the red bar above the right end of the walkway. Jump up to grab the next red bar above, and then jump and grab the edge of the opening to the right. Shoot the huge ventilation fan so Lara can get past it. Continue to the right to a CHECKPOINT.

VENTILATION DUCTS: Shoot the fan and take a running jump over the live wires. Slide down the slope. Shoot another fan. Take a running jump over the pit with the live wires. Just beyond the pit, climb down the ladder to get another silver reward. Don't drop down any further or Lara will die. Instead climb back up the ladder and continue to the right.

At the drop-off, hang from the edge and climb down the wall. Go to the right to get a bronze reward. Avoid the electrified floor to the right. Instead climb back up the wall on the left. At the top, hang from the edge and jump to grab the horizontal bar to the right. Swing and jump over to the next ledge.

Climb up the silver pipes. Jump to the slope on the right and slide down, jumping over the live wires as you slide. At the bottom, take a running jump over the electrified floor. Shoot the fan and then roll under the wire just in front of the fan. Continue right to another CHECKPOINT.

Go to the right. Climb over the crate and slide down the slope, jumping to clear the live wires. At the bottom, shoot another fan and continue forward. Roll under the wires, shoot another fan and climb onto the crate. Take a running jump over the gas vent and keep going to the right to another CHECKPOINT.

Slide down the slope. This time, don't bother jumping over the wires. The damage Lara will take is less than what she'd suffer from the fall or from accidentally hitting the fan at the bottom of the slide. Shoot the fan to shut it off. Go past it and hang from the edge. Drop down using the handholds on the wall. Go the right and climb onto the crate to get the silver reward. Don't go any farther to the right, since there's an electrified floor. Instead climb back up the wall on the left to the fan.

Step back from the edge and jump to grab the horizontal bar. (If you jump from the edge, Lara will overshoot the bar and fall.) Swing around the bar and jump to grab the next one. Swing around, jump and quickly press the grapple button (L). Then grapple swing across to the ledge on the right. Slide down the slope to a CHECKPOINT.

GENERATOR ROOM: Take a running jump over the electrified floor. Then roll under the current sparking along the yellow pipe. Climb onto the wall ahead. Jump to grab the rectangular vent on the wall to the right. (The little yellow spark is harmless.) Climb to the right and jump to grab the walkway above the live wire. Follow the walkway to the right. Use the grapple to pull down the L-shaped pipe. (This fuels the generator.)

Return to the left end of the walkway. Drop to the floor and carefully roll under the live wire to the right. Use the grapple to pull on part of the generator to turn it on. Head back to the left, roll under the wires and climb back up to the walkway the way you did before. Cross over it to the right and drop down beyond the generator. Take a running jump to clear the live wires. The next CHECKPOINT registers at the green doors.

HALLWAY WITH LIVE WIRES AND POISON GAS: Avoid the electrified floor and poison gas by climbing onto the grating ledge ahead. Take a running jump to grab the horizontal bar. Swing around and jump to grab the next ledge. Pull up. Hang from the right edge and jump to land on the fence to the right. Hop down onto the crate below. Jump to grab the horizontal bar ahead, swing, jump and grab the next walkway. Pull up.

Jump over the fence to grab the pipe on the wall to the right. If you miss, just stand on the crate and grab the pipe from there. Traverse along the pipe to the right. At the end, jump to grab the box. Then jump to the ledge above the next gas vent.

Watch the electrical spark on the pipe ahead. When they move away, jump to grab the pipe. Traverse to the right and when the spark comes toward Lara, jump past it to grab onto the pipe again beyond the electrified section. Continue climbing to the right end of the pipe. Jump to the ledge ahead. Cross over it and hop down on the other side. Continue to the next CHECKPOINT.

TALL ROOM WITH ELECTRIFIED PIPES: Climb down off the ledge. Take a running jump over the live wires. Carefully make your way past the 2 electrified poles when the sparks move upward. Climb the third pole, which is not electrified. At the top, jump to grab the horizontal bar. Then swing around and jump to grab the ledge on the right. Pull up.

The next sequence is tricky. Observe the three vertical bars on the wall to the left to get a feel for the way the sparks move up and down. Lara needs to jump across those bars, but you can't let the electricity touch her for more than a split second or she'll fall and die. Wait for the spark on the first bar to move upward. Then jump to grab it. Climb up just a little, so Lara is level with the bottom of the third bar. Quickly jump to the second, then the third bar, which is not electrified.

Now climb up the third vertical bar to the level of the horizontal bar to the left. Since the horizontal bar is so close, you must position Lara very precisely to make the jump without falling. Line her up so her hands are at the bottom edge of the decorative band on the wall that looks like a metal strip with rivets. Then jump to the left and she should grab the horizontal bar. Swing and jump across two more horizontal bars to the ledge on the left.

Take a running jump over the electrified floor. Continue to the left edge. Climb up the series of thick gold pipes. At the top, jump to the right to grab onto the narrow gold pipe. Traverse along it to the right. Jump past the electrified section and grab onto the pipe again beyond it.

Now position Lara about halfway between the edge of the electrified section and the right end of the gold pipe and jump to the right to grab the horizontal bar. (If you jump from the edge, Lara will miss the bar and fall.) Swing and jump to grab the next bar. Swing around again and jump to grab the gray vent with the electrical spark below. Climb a little to the right but not as far as the spark. Jump to grab the next vent to the right. Climb all the way to the right and then jump to grab the thick ledge ahead. Pull up, shoot the fan and go through to the next CHECKPOINT.

ANOTHER VENTILATION DUCT: Shoot the fan, roll under the wires and jump over the gas vent. Climb onto the next ledge, above the 2 gas vents, and cross over it. Jump to grab the horizontal bar. Swing and jump to the next ledge. Hop down on the other side and cross another CHECKPOINT.

BIG ROOM WITH GLASS ENCLOSURE & ELECTRIFIED FLOORS: Go to the right. At the right side of the blue glass enclosure, jump straight up to grab the ladder above. At the top of the ladder, take a running jump off the right edge to grab the pipe running along the wall. A little farther on, the pipe is bisected by a vertical metal band on the wall. Jump past that band to re-grab the pipe on the other side. Continue climbing to the right and then jump to grab the sign. Climb along the top of the sign. Jump to grab the horizontal bar then swing around and jump to grab the next sign. Climb to the right and step off onto a platform with a ladder.

I don't think the next reward is worth the health loss you'll take getting it, but if you want everything, climb down the ladder and let go at the bottom. Then hop onto the bronze reward on the electrified floor to the left and quickly jump back to the right. Then climb back up the ladder.

Hang from the right edge of the ledge (just to the right of the top of the ladder) and jump to grab the horizontal bar. Swing, jump and grab the sign. Climb along the top of it and jump to grab ledge with the blue glass in front of it. Take a running jump off the right edge and grapple swing to grab the horizontal bar. Swing around and jump into the control room. Stand in front of the computer terminal and press Up to use it. Return to the left, hang from the edge and jump to grab the ladder. Climb down.

Go to the left and attach the grapple to the cart with the sparking orb. Pull it to the right in front of the doors to trigger a cut scene.

Lara finds a shield with Lancelot's crest on it. Then her former friend Amanda shows up and begins talking about touching "it" and "it" touching her back. This is all very cryptic unless you've played one of the other versions of the game. Basically she's talking about the entity she encountered at the dig site in Peru all those years ago. Again, if you want to follow the storyline, it would probably help to read the synopses for the cinematics in the main game walkthrough.

A CHECKPOINT follows the cut scene.

THE TESLA GUN & THE UNKNOWN ENTITY: Upon entering this area, a message appears on the screen telling you to "Reactivate the Tesla experiment to reach the hilt, while defending against the unknown entity." As you approach the ladder, the view shifts to a control room above. Ahead to the right you can find the Tesla gun and the unknown entity, Amanda's monster companion. You can't fight the entity with guns, and the Tesla gun doesn't work yet. So you can avoid this area for now.

Instead climb the ladder. Stand between the top of the ladder and the left edge of the platform and jump to the left to grab the horizontal bar. (Don't jump from the edge or Lara will overshoot the bar.) Swing around the bar and jump to the next ledge on the left.

Climb the ladder here, pick up a silver reward on the left and then grapple swing over to the control room on the right. Here you'll find 3 terminals with flashing screens. Stand in front of each one and press Up to activate them.

Move to the right side of the control room and take a running jump to the ledge across the gap. Climb the ladder to the top to find a gold reward. Climb down the ladder and jump back to the control room. Run to the left side of the room. Grapple swing back across to the ledge on the left and climb down the ladder to the floor.

Run to the right. The Tesla gun is now functional. Stand touching it and press A to fire and the Control Pad Left and Right to aim. You still can't kill the entity, but if you blast it with the Tesla gun several times, it will disappear for a few moments. Then use the Tesla gun to zap the 2 glowing orbs on either side of it. When you've done this, move away from the gun (by pressing Down + B). Then face the gun and use the grapple to grab Amanda's sword fragment, which happens to be dangling above the gun. If the grapple won't work at first, try using the gun again to zap the 2 electrified orbs. Then you should be able to use the grapple. When you have the fragment, the level ends.

NOTE: Again, I don't know how you'd be able to figure out any of this if you hadn't already played one of the other versions of the game. This seems completely arbitrary and unclear in the GBA game, but this is what you need to do.
