How to Download and Install Tomb Raider I-III Remastered PC Save Files

IMPORTANT: Tombraiders.net is not responsible for anything that happens to your computer as a result of downloading these files or following advice given here. All of my files are safe and malware-free. Still, I recommend following these instructions step by step, especially the part about backing up your existing saves.

This page pertains to STEAM save files for the 2024 Remastered Tomb Raider games. I don't know if these saves work with the GOG or Epic Games version. Saves for other TR games work differently. Follow this link for save files and instructions for all Tomb Raider games.

All of the following should be done when the game is not running.

Part 1 - Downloading the .zip file:
  1. Locate the saves you need on the download page. Then click the download link.
  2. Most browsers will then automatically download the linked file into your Downloads folder. (Some browsers will pop up a dialog box asking if you want to open or save the file. Choose save.)

If you prefer, you can right-click the download link and choose 'Save as' or 'Save link as'. This will allow you to choose another location, such as the Desktop, a folder you have created for save files, etc. Browse to the location you want then click the 'Save' button to download the file.

If you're having trouble, Windows Help and your particular web browser's Help function can provide more info about downloading files from the web.

Part 2 - Finding and Backing up your existing saves:

Before you install the files you downloaded, you will probably want to back up your own save files (i.e., move them into a new folder or copy them onto a flash drive, etc.).

This is especially IMPORTANT with the remastered games, since your progress for ALL THREE GAMES and their expansions is stored in one savegame.dat file. Installing downloaded save files will REPLACE ALL YOUR SAVE DATA FOR ALL TR REMASTERED GAMES.

Our files begin at Level 1 of Tomb Raider 1 and progress through the games in order. So if, for example, you've already started TR2 and download a save for TR1, your own TR2 saves will be overwritten and disappear. If you back up your original saves first, you can restore them later and continue TR2 from where you left off.

If any of this is unclear, please feel free to contact me for advice.

To locate your own save file:

  1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Roaming\TRX\xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, where '*username*' is your actual Windows account name, and the xxxx's are series of numbers representing your Steam profile.

(That is, start by opening your main hard drive, probably (C:), then the 'Users' folder, then the folder with your actual Windows account name, then 'AppData,' and so on. Each folder is inside the previous one. If you don't see 'App Data' in this location, you may need to change your Windows settings to show hidden files and folders.)
  2. Inside the numbered folder, you'll find two files: savegame.dat and steam_autocloud.vdf. Copy these files into a new folder in a location where you'll be able to find them easily later on (Desktop, Documents, etc.).

This is VERY IMPORTANT. If something goes wrong, and our saves don't work for you, or you want to continue from where you left off in one of the other TR Remastered games, you can restore your original files.
  3. Leave the numbered folder open. You'll return to it soon.

Part 3 - Extracting the downloaded savegame files:

VERY IMPORTANT: If you haven't already backed up your own saves (as explained in PART 2, above), you should definitely do that before continuing. Otherwise, you may accidentally erase your own saves.

  1. Locate the .zip file you downloaded in PART 1, above.
  2. Double-click it to open the file.
  3. Inside you'll see a folder containing various save files for that particular section of that particular game. Copy and paste this folder (e.g., 'Tomb Raider 1 Remastered Saves') to a location where you can easily find it again (Desktop, Documents, etc.). Open the folder and browse to the save file you want. (Each subfolder includes a SaveDetails.txt file describing the location of each save in that group.)
  4. Open the C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Roaming\TRX\xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx folder, where the savegame files are stored. (It may already be open if you've been following these instructions. If not, see PART 2, above.)
  5. Now copy/paste or drag the new savegame.dat file out of the downloaded folder and into the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx folder. Windows will ask if you want to replace your existing savegame.dat file with the new one. Say yes but only if you have backed up your original saves or don't care if they're erased forever.

Part 4 – Loading the NEW save files:

Now that you've completed all of the steps above, your downloaded saves should be available in game. Close all the windows and files you've opened and start the game as usual.

In the main menu, choose the 'Game' (Passport) icon then press Enter (or Action) to bring up the list of saved games. The new saves should now be on that list. Select the save you want and press Enter (or Action) to load it, just as you would load your own saved game. Now you should be good to go!
